Oncology (Turkey)

The main direction of medical tourism in Turkey is the treatment of oncological diseases and their diagnosis. This became possible thanks to the fact that the health care system of this country pays due attention to the development of this in-demand medical field. Therefore, providing state and private clinics with modern equipment and staffing them with highly professional medical personnel is a priority task to be solved at the state level.

Turkish oncology deservedly became an example for other countries with a developed system of providing medical services in carrying out painless and safe operations to remove various tumors.

Oncology treatment methods in Turkey

Multi-profile and specialized clinics in Turkey provide patients, including those from Ukraine, with all types of effective treatment that are necessary for the fight against oncological diseases at different stages. This is facilitated by the developed pharmaceutical industry in the country, the provision of medical centers with innovative equipment and the use of standards adopted by international specialized organizations.
In the diagnosis of cancer in Turkish hospitals, high-tech methods prevail:

  • PET-CT is an imaging technology that successfully detects: tumors even in the early stages, formations less than 5 mm in size, the presence of metastases in the body.
  • Intraoperative MRI 3 Tesla is an online imaging technology that allows oncologists to see the results of tumor removal surgery and to assess it qualitatively in real time.

On the basis of preliminary diagnostics, Turkish oncologists decide on a complex of medical measures for the treatment of patients with oncology. The most progressive methods of therapy include:

  • Non-operative therapy requires special equipment and specific training of medical personnel. In Turkey, cancer is treated with the help of the following facilities:
    • TrueBeam STx – a system of non-invasive radiosurgery is used in the treatment of such complex diseases as: lung cancer, spine cancer, brain cancer. The advantage of this treatment is that the procedure takes a few minutes, and healthy tissues are not damaged.
    • RapidArc is a radiation therapy device for precise irradiation of a tumor with rays of various intensities.
    • IMRT – three-dimensional radiation therapy with intensity modulation allows to irradiate the tumor along its edge with higher doses. The technology includes the function of adjusting radiation doses, so the effect on healthy cells is negligible.
    • SBRT – stereotaxic radiation therapy of the body is used for small tumors that do not require surgical intervention. The cycle of procedures lasts several days.
    • The gamma knife is a stereotaxic radiosurgical method of destroying cancer cells with gamma rays. A universal one-time procedure for the fight against both benign neoplasms and malignant tumors, for example, tumors of the central nervous system and metastases.
    • Chemotherapy is a procedure whose goal is control over the development of mutating cells and their humiliation.

Oncologists in Turkey prescribe chemotherapy as an independent procedure and in combination with radiotherapy.
Oncology treatment methods often used in Turkish clinics also include:

  • Brachytherapy.
  • Robotic surgery (Da Vinci).
  • Ultrasound ablation (HIFU).
  • Robotic radiosurgery (CyberKnife).
  • Chemotherapeutic modified drugs.
  • Surgical treatment of cancer.
  • Stem cell therapy.
